Tennessee Lightning storm, 3-27-2021, bolts and thunder compilation V25772
Переглядів 2,1 тис.3 роки тому
On March 27th, 2021, a series of severe thunderstorms crossed middle Tennessee, causing widespread flooding and putting on an impressive lightning show. While most of the lightning stayed up in the clouds, the occasional bolt went to ground, and "cloud crawlers" put on a spectacular display every so often, too. Later in the evening, planes began landing at BNA again, and were flying directly be...

Tornado Bugs - Insect Art - Slow Motion Trails V25400
Переглядів 1,9 тис.4 роки тому
Most any summer you can find swarms of tiny little flies circulating over the lawn or other damp grassy area. These swarms can be somewhat sparse or form large dense clouds, but are almost always shaped like a tornado of sorts, hence the nick-name "Tornado Bugs". These little insects are actually known as "Fungus Gnats", and usually live in areas with damp soil where their larvae hatch and deve...

120fps Slow Motion Squirrel Jumps, Chases and Fights V24873

Squirrels do some amazing things in trees - especially when they are chasing each other. They seem to stick like glue to whatever they touch, and seldom lose their balance or fall. Only once can I remember hearing a dull "thud" and seeing a squirrel bouce off of the ground out of the corner of my eye - so they do indeed fall sometimes! Fortunately for these long-tailed acrobatic tree rodents, n...

The start of 2019 (January 20th) featured a "Super Blood Moon" - a total lunar eclipse when the moon orbits particularly close to Earth. Viewing conditions weren't looking so good due to partly cloudy skies, but fortunately there was enough clearing throughout the event to get some decent shots. So why does the "Blood Moon" glow reddish-orange? The reason is the same as why sunsets on Earth are...

    A family of scrub jays moved in to become neighbors with me. I got a huge scrub beside my drive way (my car doesn't seem to bother the birds) and I got plenty of bite-sized fruits growing in the backyard which also provides them with a whole menu of insects. Unfortunately my house has also been visited by the full list of jay predators, from rodents all the way to hawks. To be fair, the hawk is probably the more endangered bird here, but I do hope my jays can avoid becoming hawk lunch.

    What a great video. I feed both Steller and California scrub jays everyday. They’re so much fun to watch; corvids are such dramatic birds. I have tons of video to upload to my channel, just have to get around to editing it. I’ve been trying to get them to nest in the trees in my backyard so I can install a camera. Can you tell me what kind of tree this is? I’m up in the Sierra Nevada mountains so I mostly have evergreen trees around me but also have walnut trees and maple trees in my yard. Every spring both species bring their fledglings to my feeders so I know they’re nesting somewhere nearby. Thanks for the beautiful video, it really showed a different side to these birds. They’re so quiet and gentle with each other and their nestlings while at the feeders they’re loud, aggressive and entertaining. I love watching them bury peanuts on the sly, always making sure no other jays are watching. 😂🪶🪺🐦‍⬛💜

      Thanks for watching, and the nice note - I'm happy you enjoyed the show. The tree they've chosen here is a Scrub Oak, which is about 15 feet tall. I've also seen them nest in Privet and Pine. The nest is only about 8 feet up from the ground, which made it easy to slide a polecam up the trunk into position and strap it in place. More important than the type of tree is the cover which it provides. In every case, they've chosen a dense cluster of foliage which is well covered from the sides and overhead view, where hawks, crows, and Ravens are likely to see them from. You probably won't be able to encourage them to build in any particular location. However, you may be able to locate a nest by watching the birds for a while. In the spring when they first lay their eggs, the male will return to the nest regularly to bring the female food, and later, they will both come and go. They are VERY quiet around their nest, so they don't attract attention to its location. They even remove the chicks' poop and transport it elsewhere. If a predator comes very near the nest, you can listen for their alarmed squawking, which is distinctly different from their usual squawks at cats and other known predators in the general vacinity of the nest. Once you have a general idea where to look, just watch patiently to narrow it down. Good luck with your birds!

      Normally, Saturniidae moths (and many others) begin expanding their wings as soon as they are free of the cocoon. If, after a 10 minutes or so, the moth still has small crumpled wings, then it "forgot" to do it and doesn't get a second chance. This sort of malfunction happens about 5%-10% of the time, depending on the "health" of the population. I'm not sure what causes it.

    I've seen so many comments talking about how the pattern of the stars moving is weird since California isn't on an axis. I don't understand what they're saying but they sound very knowledgeable. I'm confused because I don't know why people think the pattern is weird because I don't understand why the pattern might be weird. I see that the location and angle is imperative for the results by why does it matter if California is on an axis or not?

    • @jcmegabyte
      @jcmegabyte 9 місяців тому

      Indeed the pattern of rotation will vary widely depending upon ones position on the globe, and the direction the camera is pointed. For those who arechallenged by spacial relations, it will be very difficult to imagine what the pattern SHOULD look like without some very detailed visual modeling setup. At one time I considered setting up a small "planetarium" in my garage, with a GoPro mounted on a ball, suspended on a string, which could simulate a spinning Earth. Christmas lights would be hung above to simulate stars. The camera could be placed anywhere on the ball and aimed in any direction. When the ball is spun slowly on the string, the camera would show something similar to what a person (or camera) would see from any position/direction on Earth. Unfortunately I never got around to doing this experiment. Thanks for watching and commenting! =)

    If Venus is in the 2nd orbit from the sun, how do we see it in our night sky looking in the opposite direction of the Sun which would be towards the 4th orbit?

    • @jcmegabyte
      @jcmegabyte Рік тому

      That's a good question.. Sometimes it's hard to visualize the physical orbits of our solar system without a 3D model for reference. I'll try to explain what we're seeing here... The view you see in this video is of the western sky, just after sunset. Note that the sky is still a bit blue with the remaining daylight. So, we are actually looking towards the sun, which is now just over the horizon. Even though Venus is inside of our orbit, it's still orbits far enough out from the Sun that it can be seen from Earth during that short time at dawn or dusk when it's still above the horizon but the Sun is not. Now, it get's even more fun when we throw Jupiter into tne mix! Since Jupiter is so HUGE, it reflects a LOT of sunlight, and can be seen from Earth pretty much anywhere in its orbit, so long as it isn't competing with the Sun/daylight. In this case, we're actually looking PAST the Sun at Jupiter, which is not quite on the opposite side of the Sun from us. Also, since it IS more or less opposite the Earth, we're seeing pretty-much the entire disc of Juptier (rather than a crescent), so it can reflect maximum sunlight, and appear very bright even though it's 186 million miles (approximately) farther away than if it were on the same side of the Sun with Earth, being viewed at midnight. The Moon can be pretty much anywhere in the sky (within its orbital plane, of course), so getting all these celestial bodies together is just a matter of timing. Anyway, that's how we can see the 2nd and 5th planets (plus the Moon) from planet #3, in the same general area of the sky. Hopefully I've made some sense. Thanks a bunch for watching and commenting! =)

      They can be very entertaining, and even "friendly" if you offer them a worm or some peanuts every now and then... Just don't do anything near the nest that they consider threatnening, or they (the male in particular) will follow you around and squawk at you endlessly every time you go outside! XD Thanks a bunch for watching and commenting! =)

    What were they feeding them other than the worms!?

    • @jcmegabyte
      @jcmegabyte Рік тому

      I saw the parents feed the chicks an amazing variety of things. Worms were probably the least common item on the menu. Insects were probably #1. I saw the leg of a lizard go into one chick (which barely fit) as well as various vegatables stolen from a neighbor's pet tortoise! Bits of corn, lettuce, perhaps flower buds and other unidentifiable vegi matter went into those chicks as well. You can't say they didn't get a vairable and balanced diet! The species is quite omnivorous, and seem to eat just about anything but never a lot any one thing. When presented with a regular supply of worms as I sometimes found and left below the nest, they would only eat a certain amount of them, saving room for a variety of other stuff. The variety of dietary items probably makes sure that they get all the nutrition they need, both the adults and chicks alike. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! =)

    How did you find their caterpillars?

      If you can find the host plants (Live Forever) where they are known to fly (early-mid FEB in most areas), and see the adults flying in the area, examine every plant you see for the "damage" created by the larvae. They tunnel around in the succulent leaves just below the semi-transparent leaf "skin", and the trails they leave are pretty easy to spot. If you remove a leaf with fresh-looking damage, there is likely to be a larva inside, still eating away. Unless they consume the entire leaf, they have no reason to exit until they are ready to pupate.
